Krista Novak has not been back to her hometown of Jarrell, Pennsylvania, in nearly eight years. Krista has distanced herself from her family after a bad accident involving her father. But when she gets a phone call with the news that her mother is in the hospital, she books a flight back home. However, when she finally gets back, she is in for a surprise. Her mom is in the family kitchen, cooking away. They are having a celebration and in walks Alex Costas, the man who dumped her shortly before she left for Europe. There are a multitude of unresolved feelings between them and Krista does not see that changing in her short visit.
However, hearth and home is a powerful combination, particularly during Christmas, and as Krista reconnects with her family, and with Alex, she starts to see that maybe hurrying back to Europe may be her biggest mistake yet.
I love a great Christmas romance and THE CHRISTMAS GIFT is another strong addition to the genre. Krista and Alex have major sparkage. I loved how blunt she was about her feelings for him. There is no hiding what she feels, at least when it comes to Alex. Krista has to come to terms with her family, particularly her dad. There is a distinct poignancy in Krista’s struggle to reconcile her desire to be closer to her family alongside her guilt she feels in regards to her father. I wish they had had a few more scenes together but overall, I was pleased with how they patched up their relationship. There is a lot of growth for both Alex and Krista as they try to bring their dreams to fruition. Alex had to learn to let go of his dad a little bit while Krista had to realize that she truly did want her parents in her life. This is a very sweet romance but I have to say, one of the best parts of this book is Krista’s Grandma Novak, who is trying online dating. The escapades she gets into add a great touch of humor to this story.
THE CHRISTMAS GIFT is a very enjoyable family-centric romance, with likeable characters and the remarkable feeling of coming home for the holidays. Darlene Gardner warms the heart again!
