Frede's full name, Fredericka Mercedes Hildebrand Ware, matches perfectly with the wealth and social standing she has in the Texas town of Willow Creek. At twenty-eight she is one of the movers and shakers in the local Junior League. Her life is run by unwritten rules that she can outline in great detail. The New Projects meeting of the Junior League seems to be the most pressing issue on her social calendar.
Frede's life changes in a flash when she discovers her husband has committed adultery, stolen her money and run off to parts unknown. If this horrible news gets out, Frede feels she will be ruined in Willow Creek. She must keep this awful turn of events a secret. Frede's only hope of recouping her money is Howard Grout, who fits into the Junior Leagues category of NC (No Class). Howard is willing to forgo his upfront fee with Frede since she is a bit strapped for cash. He has put a price on his services: Frede must get his equally NC wife, Nikki, into the Junior League. Has Frede made a deal with the devil?
Frede seems like a very shallow young woman, at first, but she is revealed little by little as one tough cookie, who is smart and strong. Under her reserve and impeccable manners, there is a woman of passion and resourcefulness. Gordon Ware, Frede's husband, is definitely the villain of the piece. He is so mean spirited, you can't help but cheer Frede on in her quest for revenge. Sawyer, the artist, is the love interest and he helps Frede see there are more important things in life than what to wear to the next big event and that sometimes you just have to "let it all hang out". The secondary characters add to the wicked fun of the plot and are fully fleshed out.
Author Linda Francis Lee has written a brazenly funny novel full of tongue-in-cheek humor and insights into the need to be accepted. The clever dialog and perfect pacing is sure to make THE DEVIL IN THE JUNIOR LEAGUE a bestseller. Ms. Lee's past experiences with the Junior League and Texas society shine through and lend authenticity to the engaging storyline. The novel has already been optioned for a major motion picture even before the book's release date. This is my first book by Ms. Lee, but I will be going to her backlist to read her earlier novels. If you like laughs mixed into your love stories, THE DEVIL IN THE JUNIOR LEAGUE is a "must-read".
