Augusta MacLeish, at twenty-two, is in charge of her four siblings.  Though impoverished, due to the small pittance the solicitor has been sending them, Augusta tries to make ends meet, seeing to her siblings before herself.  She has trouble with her vision since she broke her glasses the previous year and has no money to replace them. It looks like she will have to marry the forty-five-year-old balding and pockmarked vicar, who lives with his sister…a sister who hates Augusta. Her siblings are her stepbrother Arthur, who is also the Viscount of Cairnwyck at eleven, and stepsisters, Antonia, Alexandra, who is the oldest at sixteen, and Alberta.  Augusta also had a brother, who died at childbirth with her mother.  Her father later remarried, but he and her stepmother died three years ago.

Colin is the newest Earl of Fordyce and the new guardian of the five siblings.  When he hears how his new wards were going through the enormous quarterly allowance that the solicitor has been sending them, he decides to visit them and find out what they are doing with all the money.  He talks his best friend Dare into going with him to Scotland.  Then he leaves Dare at a nearby inn, wanting to meet his wards alone.

Augusta sends the four children to a party at their neighbor’s home, which is two hours away, traveling in the farm cart.  Accompanying the children is their lone male servant, Thomas and his wife, Margaret, who is their housekeeper.  Using the last dress, which once belonged to her stepmother, Augusta had made a dress for Lexie.  Having no material left to make herself a party dress, Augusta stays home alone.  She has some time to herself since the children were invited to spend the week.  Walking to the village, Augusta retrieves a letter from the solicitor, which states that no funds will be forthcoming for this quarter.  As she arrives home, she walks across the drawbridge and almost falls through a rotted board.  Hearing someone speak, she looks up at a man on horseback.  He wants to know where he can find Augusta MacLeish, believing he is speaking to a servant.  He introduces himself as Colin Fordyce, Augusta’s guardian.  As she backs up, Colin starts across the drawbridge on horseback, but when his horse Jupiter steps on a rotted board, Colin is thrown off his back.  As Colin falls, he strikes his arm, his shoulder and then hitting the ground, he strikes his head and knocks himself out.  As he awakens, Augusta is standing over him.  She introduces herself and helps him inside to the servant’s room since it is on the first floor.  Before she leaves the room, Colin cannot resist kissing her.

The next morning, as Colin is working on the drawbridge, a neighbor, Mrs. Drummond, the vicar’s sister, comes by, deciding to see how Augusta is doing by herself.  She is shocked when Dare shows up and asks Colin what happened to him the night before.  Knowing the vicar’s sister will spread her gossip all the way to London, and ruin Augusta’s reputation as well as her sisters’ chance at marriage, Colin announces that Augusta has just consented to be his bride, much to Augusta’s shock.  Since Colin has agreed to repay her for the money she failed to get the past three years, she and her siblings will finally have money.  Will she go ahead with wedding Colin?

AWAKENING AUGUSTA is a very sensual, historical, erotic romance.  As soon as Colin arrives, he knows their former solicitor was a thief and a liar.  He is determined to make things right for his wards. Though the children are her stepbrothers and stepsisters, she loves all of them and looks out for them before herself.  Her siblings look to her as if she is their mother.  Brimming with sizzling hot love scenes, witty repartee, charming characters, an enjoyable plot and romance, this story is memorable.  The secondary characters enhance the story in this novella.  I recommend AWAKENING AUGUSTA for those who enjoy some spice with their story.
