Being the eldest, American Giles Rutherford feels responsible for his siblings, as well as for his father. Giles has been experiencing pain and believes he has inherited his mother's incapacitating arthritis. Before it takes over too much of his life, Giles wants to take care of some matters. So he and his father, Richard, leave their native Philadelphia and his siblings behind, even though it is only a couple months before Christmas, and travel to England, where they hope to find the jewels left to them by Giles' deceased mother. The fortune in jewels, which actually belonged to her anyway, is the one thing she took when she married Giles' father against her parents' wishes. As a result of her disobedience, they disowned her. But before dying, she left clues to the jewels in three puzzle boxes. In England, Giles and Richard stop at an inn and soon become involved in stopping an eloping couple who are bound for the inn, in exchange for the information leading them to a puzzle box and the first of the clues to the jewelry. But when the eloping couple arrives at the inn, it is discovered that the bride-to-be is not a willing participant.

The last thing that Lady Audrina Bradleigh wants is to marry her former paramour, who needs her dowry, but he drugs her and she awakens at an inn. Although she tells him she will never marry him, he refuses to let her go. However, she is rescued by Giles and his father. With her captor in tow, Audrina's father returns to London, where Audrina's sister is about to be wed. But due to the scandal of Audrina's attempted elopement, her father won't allow her to attend her sister's wedding to a duke, for fear the bridegroom will cry off. So he sends Audrina with Giles and Richard, along with a chaperone, Lady Estella Irving. The foursome is soon on the hunt for the jewelry. Although Audrina is devastated at missing her sister's wedding, she relishes the freedom this trip has given her, as well as being in Giles' company.

After spending so much time together, Giles and Audrina are drawn to each other and the feelings between them are soon apparent. However, Giles' health issues and the fact that he does not have a title leave him feeling like he doesn't have anything to offer Audrina. But what he doesn't realize is that he makes her feel special. Will she find happiness with Giles, or will she be forced back under her father's thumb?

A sweet tale, SEASON FOR DESIRE, the fourth story in author Theresa Romain's HOLIDAY PLEASURES series, is a witty, sensual historical romance that will keep you eagerly turning the pages to discover the outcome. Giles is a bit sarcastic, at times, since he believes their quest for the diamonds is a waste of time. Still, he is intent on accompanying his father and keeping him on the straight and narrow. He doesn't want his father making any decisions that will affect the whole family. Giles and Audrina are perfectly matched as is the secondary romantic couple in this novel. However, the main focus is on Giles and Audrina, and I enjoyed watching their love blossom as they follow the many twists and turns on their quest to solve the puzzle boxes and find the jewelry.

A tender romance, a mystery that will keep you guessing, a potential blackmailer, plenty of humor and a bit of holiday magic combine in a captivating historical romance that is definitely entertaining. I was quickly drawn into this story and have become a fan of Ms. Romain's work. SEASON FOR DESIRE can be read as a standalone, despite being the fourth book in the series. But I am sure that after reading this novel, your curiosity will be whetted enough to seek out the rest of this delectable series. Be sure to pick up your own copy of this enticing tale!
