Agnes and Rose are two women living together and trying to support themselves during the Civil War. Agnes’s husband is away fighting the war and Rose, who works as the school teacher, is a widow. There two women have come to depend on each other, forming a strong friendship but neither one is exactly what they appear to be.

Agnes has worked very hard to buillt a respectable life for herself. It is very important that she appear above reproach at all times. If any of her neighbors were to suspect the truth about her past, everything she has build would be destroyed. Even though she knows it is dangerous, she cannot deny her desire for Rose. She longs to give in to her feelings for the younger woman but she is afraid of what could happen if Rose doesn’t return her feelings.

Rose is not as innocent as she appears. She also has feelings for Agnes; although she loved her husband dearly she has been attracted to women before. However, Agnes is a happily married woman. Rose is sure that Agnes would be horrified if she knew how Rose feels. Will the truth set them both free?

I found this story intriguing because of the time period in which it is set. It doesn’t seem all that far-fetched to me that two women living together in Civil War era would take comfort in one another.  Also, Agnes and Rose seemed very believable to me. I admired their courage and fortitude and their passion was very intense. Both these heroines are very appealing and I found it a pleasure to root for them. SOUTHERN ROSE by Mary Winter is a well-written and sensual historical lesbian romance.
