Miss Eustacia Marchant is lovely, vivacious, and far too adventurous for her own good; for Stacey is madly besotted with a young gentleman, Rupert Alleyne, and is determined to find her way to London and prevent him from making a more suitable marriage match. For who could be more suitable for him than her? Dressed as a boy, Stacey thinks only of the affections she and Rupert share and nothing of the dangers before her; that is, until she finds herself stuck in a tree, waiting for some drunken revelers to move on below her.

Vivyan Lagallan has finally put the wild ways of his youth behind him and is contentedly anticipating settling down with the lovely (and utterly bland) Helen Pensford. After coming to terms with her parents on the matter of their betrothal, Vivyan is looking forward to an uneventful season in Town. With the Pensford’s currently mourning a distant relative, there will be no wedding announcement yet, thankfully giving Vivyan plenty of time to rethink just how suited he and Helen really are. That is, until a bag is thrown in front of Vivyan’s carriage on his way back to London.
Vivyan has no idea what to make of Stacey, but as far as her continuing to travel towards London alone goes, his conscience simply won’t have it. Stacey’s tunnel vision with Rupert at the end of it provides no recourse for Vivyan, except to keep her in her boy costume and travel as discreetly as possible, or else both their reputations are forfeit. Stacey’s penchant for the wacky, oft-times precarious scrapes she so nonchalantly finds herself in, however, promises Vivyan is going to have a hell of a time staying incognito.
THE DREAM CHASERS is a fun, light-hearted romantic Regency comedy that will leave a silly grin on your face the rest of the day.
Stacey and Vivyan’s repartee is charmingly entertaining, nicely balancing the playful teasing of teenagers with that of the flirtatious possibilities of an adult relationship. Of course, Stacey has no idea what an adult relationship entails, but it never fails to amuse how blatantly infatuated she is with Rupert, blind to Vivyan’s obvious charms. And lucky for her, too, since it’s that very infatuation with another that allows Vivyan to share a side of him that few women (other than his sister-in-law) get to see. His falling prey to Stacey’s charms is handled as subtly as her realization “to be careful what she wishes for, she just might get it,” and it really is something to behold. But what’s not so subtle is how Stacey ensures everyone finds their happy-ever-after. It’s crazy and bizarre and wild and all the things one would come to expect from a wacky, spitfire heroine like Stacey. She brings new meaning to “taking a bull by its horns,” and by the end, which arrives far too soon, the reader will be chuckling down to the very last word.
For certain, Melinda Hammond’s THE DREAM CHASERS is an enchanting read that will leave readers feeling both sated and quirkily happy.
