Lady Gillian d'Averette has been chatelaine of her family's estate since the death of her father.   A fair and hard-working woman, she has earned the respect and love of her people.   Unlike her two sisters, Gillian has neither the need nor the desire to travel and is currently the only one in residence at Averette.   Gillian and her sisters have vowed never to marry, having seen firsthand the misery of living under a tyrant's rule.   Lizette and Adelaide are both beauties but as Gillian is not, she doesn't expect to have much trouble keeping the vow.   She is content, and doesn't expect many changes in her life.   Then Sir Bayard de Boisbaston appears at the gates of Averette.

Bayard claims to carry a letter from Adelaide.   The news it contains is disturbing, and Gillian isn't convinced it is genuine.   According to the message, Adelaide has married Bayard's brother, Armand; she and her husband have uncovered a conspiracy to overthrow King John and Gillian and Lizette are now in danger as a result.   When Gillian realizes the letter was truly written by Adelaide, she fears for her people, her home, and her family.   Will Averette be adequately defended if the conspirators attack?   Who can be trusted?

Sir Bayard de Boisbaston is the half-brother of Adelaide's new husband, Armand.   Thanks to the patience of Armand, Bayard overcame the rather wild and rebellious nature instilled by his father's treatment of him as a boy.   He owes his brother more than he can ever repay.   Because Armand asked him to do so, Bayard will defend Averette and the somewhat odd, rather plain Gillian with his life.   Unless Armand informs him otherwise, Bayard will not consider his duty completely discharged until Averette and Gillian are safe.

Gillian is an unusual woman, often dressing as a peasant and working right alongside her people, yet she clearly cares for each and every person under her rule.   Bayard can't help but admire such loyalty and dedication.   Although Gillian is less than thrilled with Bayard's presence, she can't deny the added security a knight and his men bring to Averette.   His actions seem to belie rumors Gillian has heard about his reputation and womanizing ways.   She finds herself drawing closer and closer to Bayard.   He finds he is far too attracted to Gillian, too.   Because Bayard's brother is married to Gillian's sister, the church considers them family and prohibits marriage between them.   Can Bayard and Gillian fight their forbidden attraction, while working together to defend against the conspirators and possibly even traitors in their midst?

Once again, Margaret Moore creates characters with hidden depths, strong enough to handle unexpected dangers and intelligent enough to trust their own opinions and ideas, neither blindly ignoring nor blindly accepting the advice of others.   Gillian found plenty of adventure and intrigue without ever venturing beyond Averette.   I hoped Bayard would look past her rather plain exterior and realize the sterling qualities she embodied gave her a far more enduring beauty than mere good looks.   His awareness of what he owed his brother for straightening him out in his younger days spoke very well of Bayard's own nature.   Gillian heard some very disturbing rumors about Bayard, but I hoped she would trust her own observations rather than the opinions of others.   As much as I wanted to find out what would happen to Bayard, Gillian, and the people around them, I didn't want the story to end!   THE NOTORIOUS KNIGHT is an excellent sequel to Margaret Moore's MY LORD'S DESIRE.   I can't wait to find out what happens when the series continues in KNAVE'S HONOR!
