A strange sound coming from behind her made her turn. She looked down the barrel of a gun held by a masked man. There was no way she could draw and get him first. He mumbled something to her in a language she didn’t’ understand and rode off. She followed. Skylar wasn’t one to let things or people get the best of her. He winged her in a shoot-out. She fell and then listened as he closed in on her. The hammer being pulled back on the gun frightened her. But the strangest thing in the world happened. A hawk screeched, the man shot, she wasn’t hurt and then he rode off.
Wade Sinclair has been sent to eliminate one Skylar Davenport. Word reached the agency he worked for that she was responsible for George and Edna Harper’s deaths. The message also told of George and Edna’s will which left Skylar their farm should something happen to them. If she were to die, the farm would revert to someone else. That someone else wanted the land, but then so does a conglomerate ranching concern buying up and killing out the people to get their land.
Skylar has sole responsibility for herself and her younger sister. Their mother died and their father just took off, leaving them all to fend for themselves. Money is tight and she’s just barely making ends meet, if that.
Skylar and Wade meet when she finds him skinny-dipping in a pond on her property. Their attraction to one anther is immediate. Sparks fly and not all of them good. When she learns that he and his brother are living on the Harper spread and using it to train mustangs, she becomes suspicious. One thing that draws her attention is the horse. The same horse ridden by the murderer. Did one of these men murder George and Edna? Why are they so secretive when she asks them point blank questions?
From this point on WANTON TEMPTATION branches out into many twists and turns leaving the reader wondering who really is responsible for the Harpers’ deaths. The more things happen, the more it looks like Skylar may have killed them. But she sees it the other way.
There are some delightfully funny and very tender scenes throughout the rest of the story. Some will have you in stitches and some will make you want to cry. Ruth D. Kerce has written a gripping whodunit that I highly recommend! This book will take more than one reading. The first time, you’ll want to get to the end to see who did it. The second time will be for pleasure. You’ll want to see the relationship between Wade and Skylar grow. Then there is the budding relationship between their siblings. This is the first of her WANTON series. Can’t wait for the next one.
This is definitely a keeper and a recommended read. You do not want to miss this treat!
