McKenna’s grandmother dreamed of converting their ancestral home into a bed and breakfast, and McKenna plans to turn that dream into reality. But she owes a lot of money in taxes and a mortgage, and a hungry developer wants the land to build condos and keeps making offers to buy it. McKenna was on schedule until her contractor fell from a roof and ended up in a wheelchair, so she asks her friend and distant cousin, Vivica, who runs the Works Like Magick employment agency, to find a handyman for her.

Bastian has come to earth from an island beyond the veil where he and other Roman soldiers were banished and turned into dragons. Andra, Goddess of Hope, is trying to send the dragons, one by one, to earth to save them, but Killian, the sorceress who banished them, will be hard to defeat. Bastian must find his heartmate and make her quest his own. Vivica is trying to get him up to speed on English and other practices on life on Earth, but he has a habit of taking things very literally.

Once he sets eyes on McKenna, Bastian knows he’s found his heartmate, but she will take a lot of convincing. She’s a full-figured woman and not happy about her size. On top of that, she doesn’t have a great track record with men. She actually dated the developer twice before she saw through his tactics.

Annette Blair must have had a lot of fun with this tale, especially all the dialogue with Bastian taking every comment literally until he reads the dictionary and gets a stronger handle on the English language. Filled with fun, sex and romance—with some suspense thrown in for good measure—fans of Blair’s previous work will rejoice at seeing her start a new series. Melody Seabright, the kitchen witch, makes a brief appearance as well. The chapters are quite short, so it’s easy to get caught up, reading just one more, and pretty soon you will have finished the book.

Blair gives readers a strong supporting cast as well with McKenna’s best friend, Lizzie and her family; Dewcup, the fairy always getting into trouble and Jock, the petit guardian dragon. While she includes sex, Blair doesn’t forget the romance in any way, and it’s lovely to watch Bastian slowly but surely break down McKenna’s barriers. It’s a funny, warm-hearted paranormal romance that will regale older fans and create new ones for Blair.
