Dante tells himself he doesn’t care whether Alexis lives or dies, as long as he is freed from the hell he’s been imprisoned in. Yet he is fascinated by her beauty and goodness. She is able to bring forth feelings he’s never experienced before and invokes a need to possess. Though she is frightened of what her captor is capable of, Alexis knows there is a light within him that could grow in magnitude if given a chance. Soon the two are irrevocably connected and Alexis will become Dante’s key to freedom in ways he never planned. However, can Alexis help Dante understand her love before his beast consumes him?

 

 

While this isn’t a fluffy romance, A MERMAID’S RANSOM is an emotion gripping novel that will have you just on edge the entire read. Joey Hill does an astounding job tethering contrasting elements such as cruelty and kindness, pain and pleasure, and awareness versus the lack thereof. These plays on contrasts are ingrained in her characters, as well as the worlds and surroundings they come into contact with. The story is presented in such a way that the hero’s subtle changes and spark of light are tangible, despite his rougher, more aggressive nature. The more shocking moments in the beginning only leads to more appreciation of the outcome in the end.  I can’t wait for future releases in this series.
