Gwendolyn is desperate.  With her grandfather gravely ill, it is up to her and her brother, Rhys, to protect Avalon from the Romans.   When she dreams of a sword, she knows that the answer is right there if only she can find the right blacksmith who would be willing to forge this mystical sword.   There is only one man she trusts with this task and that person is Marcus Aquila, a Roman, who has his own reasons to distrust the Druids.   Can he put aside his suspicions to help her?

I’ve been anxiously waiting for DEEP MAGIC since the end of THE GRAIL KING.   Although Marcus is a successful blacksmith, he has had to fight the prejudice that as the son of a Roman officer this work is beneath him.   He uses this as inspiration to make himself better.   However, all his success takes a backseat when it comes to his family.   He’s very protective of them and it is clearly seen with his devotion and concern towards his half-sister Breena.   He tries to do whatever he can to shield her even though he knows that she is growing up and will soon have to face her destiny.   When he is with Gwen, he can pretend that he’s just a man and learns to look past her heritage to see the woman destined to be his wife.   However, he knows that they cannot be selfish and that reality and responsibility is sometimes more important than happiness.

Gwen’s life has never truly been her own.   Groomed to be the next Guardian of Avalon, she has never really thought of herself as a woman with needs.   She’s always put other people ahead of her.   With Marcus, she throws caution to the wind and knowingly enters into an affair where the only outcome is heartbreak.   And yet, they both find a way to work together to defeat the evil that is threatening Avalon even though they both know that their time is limited.   It would take a supreme sacrifice for them to find their way back to each other.   It was wonderful to see the secondary characters and how their lives have progressed.   I’ll be curious to see if Rhys will ever find happiness but I believe if DEEP MAGIC is any indication, Ms. Nash will have a wonderful story to come.
