Gingersnaps: Santa Paws

Under advisement of his sister-in-law Charm, JR Thornton is trying to let go of his lists and plans and learn to be more impulsive while attempting to make up for all the wrongs he’s committed.  JR’s donned a Santa suit to deliver gifts to an orphanage even though he’s been told that the children will not be there.  No sense in ruining the illusion for the little tykes.

JR thought that the Lucky Charms Group Home would be empty of people so imagine his surprise when he hears the ‘ka-chink’ of ammo being loaded into a weapon – one he’s certain is pointed right at him.  After convincing the young woman at the business end of the rifle that he really doesn’t mean any harm and Charm knows that he’s there the young woman allows him to go about his business of placing the gifts under the tree.

It’s not until he removes the Santa beard because it itches that Phaedra recognizes him – and wishes she’d shot first and asked questions later.  Because of the destruction JR did to the surrounding forest displaced her and her family.  She now works as a caregiver at the Group Home and is close to finishing earning her college degree.

JR hadn’t been aware that there were wood fairies in the forest he’d destroyed but he does already have plans in force to fix what he’s destroyed – Phaedra wouldn’t be aware of that though.   She wants to take a chunk out of his furry werewolf hide – almost as much as she wants to indulge in all sorts of naughty things with the pseudo Santa.

Lena Austin delights the imagination with her enchanting short story SANTA PAWS.  Infused throughout the story are appropriate snippets from the well known poem THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS and I admit I got a chuckle at how naughty some of them sound when used in just the right context.  JR’s attempt at redeeming himself are very sweet and you can sense his discomfort at the possibility of being caught delivering gifts wearing a Santa suit.  Phaedra’s rage at him is heartfelt and easily understandable.  They don’t seem to be a very likely couple but they have an undeniable chemistry that is very exciting – especially since JR keeps having trouble maintain his full human form while with Phaedra.
