Photographer Ben Lantano and journalist Savanna Blaine are on their way back home from an assignment. Savanna isn’t really sure that Ben’s truck is going to get them there but he’s confident enough that it will.

Unfortunately, something or someone has a different idea. The truck’s engine is the first to go. Savanna’s attempt to call Roadside Assistance fails because the cell connections are dead.

Ben assures her there’s a gas station within a mile. So they start walking. Something zooms by and leaves them a little worse for the wear with some road rash. After they check themselves out, they decide it would probably be a better idea to walk along the side of the road instead of down the middle. Whatever went by didn’t come back.

When they walk around to the other side of a huge rock they see what appears to be a resort. The steep wall of the canyon provides a dramatic backdrop. The place isn’t on the map, so they’re not sure if it’s real. The only way to find out is to start walking toward it.

They hope to find help there. The closer they get the more they realize the place is real. They check in and everything that follows is so surreal they’re not sure they’re living it or dreaming it.

As I read this story, the lyrics to HOTEL CALIFORNIA kept running through my head. I kept waiting for someone to tell them they could check in but they couldn’t leave. Jennifer Colgan’s LA MIRAGE is definitely a story you’ll want to read – more than once, I’d think. I loved the interaction between Ben and Savanna. One touch sparked a night of unbridled passion many people dream about but never experience. The visuals are so very real.

Will their tentative connection last once LA MIRAGE disappears? It’s anyone’s guess. Put this one on your To Be Read list this summer.
