Nicolas is the Prince of Draconia, also known as the prince of spies.  He serves in that capacity for his brother King Roland.  His mission is twofold, to gather all the intelligence he can find about King Lucan of Skithdron and to search for the Queen's missing twin sister.  Surrounded by guards, Nico believes his confidant sold him out yet, Nico thinks "no big deal" he'll escape later when he is left alone.  He is bound in chains and brought to a room where King Lucan already has someone in chains.  Nico feels sympathy for the starving waif.  King Lucan notices his attention to his healing witch.  King Lucan interrogates Nico demanding to know what he is doing in his kingdom.  Nico, of course, evades the issue or remains silent as the king beats him up hoping for answers.  Finally, Nico passes out.  King Lucan then demands his healing witch heal the man and clean the room up.  Promptly getting to work she cleans the room and then heals Nico, exhausted from lack of food she collapses near him, drawn to his warmth she comes as close as she dares.  Soon Nico awakens to find the waif lying next to him shivering.  He pulls her closer into his arms to better share his heat with her.  After a little study he realizes that this is Arikia, the Queen's twin sister, despite her bedraggled appearance.  Awakening, she is startled to find herself in Nico's arms and backs away in fear.  Arikia is surprised to hear her name, she hasn't heard it in years.  Nico quickly explains who she is and tells her to trust him.  While she was sleeping he noticed that they had bonded on a rare level, where they can share strength and healing with one another.  Nico is falling in love and Riki is very precious to him.  Will Riki return Nico's love?  Will they safely escape?  Will this bond last a lifetime?

Ms. D'arc has done it again.  Another masterpiece in PRINCE OF SPIES.  Her cast of characters is well defined and become treasured friends by the end.  The pacing is just right it flows with fluid grace from scene to scene.  The descriptions are such that you feel that you too can become a dragon and fly.  The imagery is vivid.  Added together they become fuel to the imagination.  What makes this book special is that it is capable of standing alone, unlike other series work today.  You can’t just pick up number five and then number two in a series and expect to enjoy it when you don’t have the relationship to the characters in proper order.  This series is different in that you can choose those numbers and read them out of order without getting confused about the characters.  This series just has a common theme and a few regular characters that are connected.
