Emily Hudson, a thirty-year-old artifacts expert for the UN, travels to hot spots and war zones trying to keep their priceless treasures and museum pieces from being destroyed.  Always by her side is her twenty-seven-year-old best friend and partner, Joel Levy, who is fluent in Hebrew and several Middle Eastern languages, making him invaluable to Emily.  She is brilliant, dedicated and respected, but she has no personal life.  Emily has been working for the UN since she received her degree.  She had been building up to this; working her way through school and going on special youth trips to help third world countries.

John Garrett spent years in Afghanistan as a kid and has many contacts there.  He is also well versed in the lay of the land.  As a kid, he was poor, but now he has made up for it and has plenty of money.  He is not thrilled with the CIA or with Ferguson of the CIA.  He hasn’t spoken to them in three years.  That was when he was on an assignment for them and they left him behind to fight his own way out of a sticky situation.  Normally, he is willing to work for anyone who will pay for his services…CIA, MI6, etc.

When Emily and Joel took their crew into Darlov, Afghanistan, her whole crew was attacked and killed, except Emily and Joel, who were taken hostage.  Their captor Staunton, who was evil personified, was looking for Zelov’s Hammer, which contained the missing clue to a fortune.  Although Emily swore repeatedly that she knew nothing about the item, he still tortured Joel daily to persuade her to talk and forced her to watch.  For weeks, this went on.  Then John Garrett came to her rescue, but he was one day too late for Joel.  Emily lost her best friend in one of the most horrible and inhuman ways possible and she wants vengeance.  Extracting a promise from Garrett, she wants him to help her find Staunton so she can kill him.   Emily is fragile and Garrett refuses to hand her over to Ferguson.  Garrett and Emily are attracted to each other and they are starting to have feelings for each other.  However, though he wants to protect her, she makes it clear that she does not need it.  Before they can look for Staunton, they must find who is pulling his strings.  Will they be able to find this monster before he kills again?  Who is behind all of this torture and murder?

DEADLOCK is a romantic suspense that will take you on an adventure, which you will find yourself thinking about and talking about long after the last page is turned and the last word is read; this book is unforgettable.  It grabbed me from the very first page and did not let go until the very end of the book.  Filled with romance, mystery, suspense, sensuality and an intriguing plot, this book is a winner.  I highly recommend DEADLOCK to anyone looking for a terrific, edge-of-your-seat, thrilling read.
