ATF agent Rafe Salazar is not a happy man. His partner and brother-in-law, Agent Phillip Reynolds, has provided the District Attorney’s office with an audiotape of a murder, one he’s a witness to. Agent Reynolds is bound and determined to do the right thing, even if Rafe doesn’t approve. He knows it’s a big risk and he’s putting his life on the line, but he’s going to testify even if it’s the last thing he does.

Gunrunner and murderer Victor Bennington will do anything not to go to prison for murder or for the gun running he’s doing. He’s a man in control and at the top of his game. No ATF agents or pesky ADA are going to put him behind bars. He decides to eliminate the threat, leaving Rafe no choice but to protect Lorelei. While she is in his protective custody, he’ll do what it takes to keep her safe, but who is going to keep him and his heart safe from Lorelei?

This fast-paced story has a perfect balance of romance and suspense. The threat to both Rafe and Lorelei is believable and at some points quite frightening for the reader. With its many twists and turns, I was at times unsure who to trust and found myself wanting Rafe and Lorelei to stop trusting anyone but each other. There are some definite tear-jerking moments, and I found myself very weepy at times while reading this book.

Rafe is strong and forceful, but has his tender moments as well. He is everything I like in a romantic suspense hero. One part daring, one part reckless, one part cocky and all man. He took charge when he needed to, made plenty of tough decisions, but beneath it all he has insecurities and doubts making him one well rounded Alpha male.

Lorelei is gutsy and brave, but she knows when to yield to Rafe and when to put her foot down. She is smart, confident and witty, she is very likable and if I were in a legal bind I would want her on my side for sure. She takes risks and sticks her neck out and doesn’t apologize for being who she is or for what she does.

Ms. Williamson delivers on all counts with IN HIS PROTECTIVE CUSTODY. There’s just enough romance balanced with plenty of suspense. She weaves a story that had me guessing till the end. This book is a definite keeper.
