For years, Marylee thought the lovely couple in the picture is her parents. Aunt Rose always told her that they were. After all, her Aunt wouldn’t lie. She had taken Marylee in when her parents tragically died, but she constantly evaded the past and lived in fear of someone finding them. Now with Aunt Rose gone, Marylee moves back to Burlington, Virginia.

In the town, Marylee buys a shop and opens Crafts and More. Her store has been a good business decision, but coming back to Virginia wasn’t. Marylee’s return leads her down trails that Aunt Rose tried to hide from her. Her Aunt always told her to never go back to Virginia, because you don’t know who ‘they’ are.
Encouraged by Johanna, her best friend, Marylee enlists the help of Evan Baxter, although contacting him goes against her good sense. Evan owns a photography shop and works with the police on forensics. When Marylee discovers that Evan is the handsome stranger who winks at her every morning as she orders a medium nonfat latte, she’s shocked. She tries to abandon the idea of getting his help. After all, he dumped Johanna after three dates.
When Marylee shows him the photo, she can tell that he knows something, but he covers it right away. He agrees to check out the photo, and asks her out for dinner. She refuses at first, but finds she is drawn to him. He is charming, handsome, with a sweet nature. As they spend time together, Marylee can’t stop herself from wondering what Evan isn’t telling her. Is he trying to keep something hidden in her past, or his?
Strange things begin to happen. From her apartment above Crafts and More, she sees a man standing at the bus stop in the rain during the middle of the night. She can see him smoking, while looking up at her apartment windows. Several times, she has come home to find her balcony door unlocked. Certain that she locked it, she can’t figure out how someone would get through the security codes and locked doors. As Marylee investigates, no records can be found of her parent's birth or even their death, leaving her clueless. Someone is trying very hard to keep her from finding out about her past and parents.
Linda Hall is an engaging writer and SHADOWS IN THE MIRROR is a gripping suspense novel with a Christian slant. Linda’s style of writing is so compelling that I felt like part of the story. I could clearly see Marylee’s dreams and could feel the fear that she felt as she struggled to find the truth. I couldn’t wait to find out if Marylee will ever trust Even enough to let him help her. She believes that God will see her through this. As she draws on His strength, she continues with the quest of finding out what happened to her parents.
This book kept me turning the pages until I had finished. Have your favorite drink nearby, because you won‘t be able to put this book down!
